Greetings, traveller !

You found The Last Ninja Archives.
The Last Ninja was (and still is) one of my favourite games on the C64 (and many other systems).
It was (and still is!) notorious for its wonderful music and outstanding graphics which created a very unique atmosphere.

Last Ninja was the most successful original game ever on the Commodore C64. In Europe the sales for the C64 version alone were in excess of 750,000 units and international multi-format sales exceeded 2,000,000 units. It won almost every award available and was critically acclaimed everywhere as an original, ground-breaking game. There is no C64 gamer that has not heard of Last Ninja. Even today, people still talk about the impact it had on the gaming world.
(taken from the Studio 3 (formerly System 3) website)

Since there wasn't any website about the Last Ninja back in mid '97 I decided to create one. We've come a long way since then!
More and more sections were added, more webspace was needed...and with much help, criticism, praise, submissions and suggestions from you fellow Ninja the Last Ninja Archives have grown to be (and continue to grow!) what they are today!

Go ahead and dive into the sea of nostalgia - happy exploration! :)

"Burgers, anyone ?"

The Ninja is very popular. Currently there are four custom engines in the works! You could also take a look at the homepage of a Team Fortress Classic Last Ninja clan or browse another LN site. Alternatively, read this LN poem or sing this LN song. Or read some interesting LN info Ali gathered...

Other things you can't live without...

The Last Ninja 1 PC version is too hard ?
Save your game, open the file NINJA.SAV and change the byte at $59 to FF. This will give you 255 lives. Don't know how to do it ? Well, use this savegame.
Or take a look at some cheats. (Thanks Luke)
Here's a cheat for Amiga LN3:
Gather over 600 points and in the hall of fame entry type: ILLBEBACK
This should give you infinte lives and with F1 and other buttons you can skip levels.
(Thanks Dinko!)

Undocumented feature: Use SHIFT +/- to speed up or slow down the game! (LN1 C64)
(the two keys between zero and backspace in CCS64 correspond to +/- on the C64 keyboard)
Thanks to the Hugh Riley for this! =]
You might use it to run past those dragons at the ends of stage 1 and 2.

Oh, and did you know that when you succeed in evading an enemy armed with a sword
and running past him he will most probably commit suicide ?

Too much freetime award:
The somersault backwards! Walk backwards, then quickly push the joystick (or whatever) into the opposite direction and press the fire button.
If you were fast the Ninja will make a normal somersault.
If you were very fast the Ninja will make a vertical somersault.
If you were extraordinarily fast the Ninja will make a reverse somersault.
(Thanks Stefan!)

LN2: If you run past some enemies before they hit the ground (talk about a quick kill)
they will get up and continue fighting you as zombies. As soon as you hit them their energy reverts to normal. Hm.

When you stand on beaten enemies after their energy has replenished
they can't get up until you move! :) (Thanks Luke/Scorpion!)

Elf found this out:
In Last Ninja 2 in Central park the guards need to be beat twice, except for the first one so they stay down. In the City Streets you have to beat the guys three times. Four times in the Sewers and so on... Which means you have to beat the guards in the Mansion seven times if you want them to stay dead! The first guard before the Final Battle will revive forever. You can't kill him.

Mike O'Hara was annoyed to find out that the ninja magic you get in the wilderness wears off even while you pause the game! And the duration on it is three minutes precisely.

Cheat for the Spectrum version of Last Ninja 2 (thanks to Terry Davis) "when fighting: as you throw punches and kicks, keep tapping the pause too (so to play the game in a pseudo slo-motion). Voila! When timed correctly (I believe it is the simultaneous action of Pause+Enemy's Energy Loss), the enemy dies with a single hit. It will definately shorten battles!!"

LN3 CD32 level codes: SUSS, IMED, VRTI (or URTI), BASD, NVOS, REOO (or RERO)
For unlimited lives immediately press top left + top right + blue as the game begins to load. (Thanks to Maham!)

Here's my short pseudomanual to get you going

First things first:
<Space> - lets you cycle through your weapons.
F1 - toggle music on/off
F3 - select item (scroll up)
F5 - select item (scroll down)
F7 - pause
Run Stop - DIE!

Two things that come to mind:
Don't ready a weapon when you want to pray.
Never ready a weapon when you want to do some climbing!

Combat

Button+up produces quick front slashes towards the enemy's head.
Button+left lets you try to cut (sword) him in half or hit him on the head. Badly.
Use this technique if the enemy stands too near to hit him any other way.
Button+right makes a piercing thrust towards the stomach. Ouch.
(without any weapon you only punch at the head)
Button+down for some serious kicking.
Shuriken and bombs are thrown by pushing the joystick left or right (+button).
